POCUS Eligibility and Prerequisites

Eligibility for POCUS Certification

The Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Certification Academy offers certification opportunities to healthcare professionals who use ultrasound to enhance clinical decision-making at the patient’s bedside. Applicants must demonstrate clinical training, practical experience, and a commitment to safe ultrasound practice.

Candidates from a variety of healthcare backgrounds—including physicians, nurses, midwives, sonographers, and other licensed practitioners—are eligible to pursue POCUS credentials as long as they meet the foundational educational and clinical requirements outlined below.

Minimum Prerequisites

Before enrolling in a POCUS certification program, candidates should meet the following basic prerequisites:

  • Hold a recognized degree, diploma, or license to practice in a clinical healthcare field.
  • Demonstrate prior ultrasound or imaging exposure (either through clinical training, workshops, or supervised practice).
  • Show evidence of current clinical involvement in patient care or a related medical specialty.
  • Commit to following ethical standards and ultrasound safety guidelines.

Recommended Experience

While formal ultrasound education is beneficial, candidates are encouraged to have at least basic familiarity with ultrasound physics, image acquisition, and interpretation. For clinicians new to ultrasound, completing the POCUS Fundamentals Certificate is strongly recommended prior to pursuing advanced certification tracks.

“The POCUS Certification Academy welcomes all healthcare professionals dedicated to improving patient outcomes through safe and effective use of point-of-care ultrasound technology.”

Special Considerations

Applicants who have already passed the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) exam within the last five years, or hold an ARDMS® or APCA™ certificate, may be eligible for prerequisite waivers when applying for the Fundamentals or advanced POCUS certifications.

Documentation Required

During the application process, candidates may be required to provide:

  • Proof of medical or clinical qualification (degree, license, or certificate).
  • Verification of clinical practice or institutional affiliation.
  • Completion of prerequisite modules or equivalent training.
