Yinka Oyelese, MD, is Director of Obstetric Imaging at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School, and is internationally recognized for his expertise in obstetric ultrasound and high-risk pregnancy, particularly disorders of the placenta and umbilical cord, including vasa previa, placenta previa, placenta accreta, and placental abruption. He received his medical degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, trained in obstetrics and gynecology before moving to the United Kingdom for advanced training in high-risk pregnancy and obstetric imaging at St. George’s Hospital, London, under Professor Stuart Campbell, and subsequently completed residency training at Georgetown University Hospital and fellowship training in Maternal–Fetal Medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (Rutgers University) under Dr. Anthony Vintzileos. Dr. Oyelese’s landmark work on vasa previa has transformed global awareness and clinical practice, leading to widespread prenatal diagnosis, planned delivery, and the saving of countless lives, while his pioneering research on placental and cord disorders has shaped national and international guidelines and improved perinatal outcomes; one of his review articles on placenta previa, placenta accreta, and vasa previa is the most highly cited publication in the field, with over 1,400 citations. His research interests also include prenatal diagnosis, obstetric hemorrhage, medical history, artificial intelligence in prenatal ultrasound, and advanced imaging techniques such as three-dimensional ultrasound. He has authored or co-authored more than 120 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, with over 7,900 citations (h-index 34), has contributed extensively to textbooks, served as Guest Editor for two editions of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is frequently invited to write editorials and commentaries. A dedicated educator and mentor, he has received multiple teaching honors, including the APGO/CREOG National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education, serves on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Perinatal Medicine and as Section Editor for VISUOG, and has reviewed for more than 30 journals. Prior to his current role in Boston, he held numerous academic and leadership positions, including Interim Director of Maternal–Fetal Medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Director of Maternal–Fetal Medicine at several major institutions, and he lectures widely in the United States and internationally at meetings of leading professional societies; outside of medicine, he is also an accomplished photographer and musician.
